Let’s imagine you have 1000 shares of a stock that pays a 3% dividend and sells for $100/share. That $100K investment will generate $3000 per year in dividend income. That’s nice. But what if you sell an out of the money call option against that same stock and get 1%/month in call premium? Do that 12 times per year and you’re looking at 12,000 in call premium PLUS the 3,000 in dividend income, for a total of 15,000 per year income.
The only downside is by selling the calls you put a cap on your upside. But if you set that cap 5% above current market price then you know if it’s called away you’ve made at least 5% for that month, which isn’t bad at all (not to mention the call premium you got for selling the call).
